It is unknown where the expression 'de luie wijvensteek' (the lazy woman stich) comes from. Wijf was the common name for woman until the seventeenth century. In current standard Dutch, wijf usually has a negative sound. There is a devaluation of meaning. Lazy, on the other hand, leaves little to the imagination. In this knitting, the artist has dropped three stitches each time, creating an open pattern. Judging from the expression, he deliberately didn't finish it.
